Understanding Desalinated Water
The supply of water in the city of Dubai largely depends on seawater desalination. Although this yields microbiologically safe water that is within WHO standards, certain water properties are formed during the process that influence taste and domestic utilization. Water after the process of desalination has a Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) measure of 150-400 parts per million.
The major dissolved solids are sodium due to partial removal of salt, calcium, and magnesium that are added as health and taste enhancers, and chlorine as a disinfectant. It is moderately hard with a value of 200-350 ppm equivalent to calcium carbonate.
Pre- and Post-filtration Advancements
Drastic improvement is shown by professional water testing. The tap water in Dubai is generally 250-350 ppm TDS and that of the RO filter is 10-30 ppm TDS, a 90-95 percent decrease. Carbon filtration causes a reduction of chlorine level of 0.3-0.5 ppm to insignificant levels.
